What to expect

Pediatric wellness visits follow guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to cover every area of your child’s growth and development. Here’s a closer look at what we’ll talk about when you bring your child in for their check-up.

Development Milestones

Children have different social, cognitive, physical, and communication milestones depending on their age. For example, most six-month-olds have just started learning how to recognize faces, respond to their name, and support their weight when they stand. But most five-year-olds have started learning to be like their friends, tell a story in complete sentences, and use the toilet all on their own.

Your doctor will go over these areas and more for your child’s best health and your understanding of how you can help support it. Yet it’s also important to talk about your child’s challenges. For example, if they don’t respond to loud sounds or watch things that move, they might need extra help meeting these milestones as they grow.

General Lifestyle

Our goal with these visits is to improve your child’s quality of life. This means learning about their day-to-day wellness, what activities they enjoy, and how they’re doing overall. This might include talking about how your child is coping with friends, family, and school.

You’ll also discuss immunizations and any sudden changes in your child’s mood, health, or activities. These are important, and every detail matters. We want to do more than just care for your child. We want to build a relationship with them, and anticipate their needs the best we can.

What are the benefits of a pediatric visit?

You can think of pediatric wellness visits as assessments along your child’s road to wellness. Here’s a short breakdown of why these visits are so important and how your child benefits from them.

Prevention & Early Detection

Just as with any other area of healthcare, early detection and prevention are key to keeping your child in good health. When you talk to your doctor, tell them about any social, cognitive, physical, or communication delays that you’ve noticed in your child.

If you can, take as many notes as possible when you first notice these delays. Write down what happens, when it happens, and how often it happens. Your doctor will need as much information as possible to diagnose and treat what’s going on and to help set your child up with a therapist if necessary.

Monitoring & Building Relationships

Whereas early detection and prevention help your doctor put your child on the right path for wellness, monitoring helps keep them on that path. Tracking your child’s growth and development also helps you anticipate your child’s needs as they come up on certain milestones, which change with age.

Yet your doctor also wants to build a relationship with you and your child. After all, the better we get to know them, the better we can care for them. We want to take our time during your visit, listen to you, and focus most on helping your child meet every milestone.

Progress

Wellness visits also help your doctor measure your child’s progress. Not only can your doctor track any progress with physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy if they’ve been necessary, but this tracking helps your child’s care team stay on the same page.

Scheduled wellness visits to track this progress also gives you peace of mind about your child’s growth and development. We want the best for your child, and you do too. These visits let you ask your doctor anything about how to meet your child’s needs at home or school, and we’re committed to helping you do it.
